Chapter 2820: Demonic Restricted Area (XVI)
After receiving the consultation results from Greed, the Bishop immediately contacted Peter and asked him to try to leave the hotel.
Peter had just woken up. He rubbed his swollen eyes, got up, picked up his equipment, and walked out towards the elevator.
With a ding, the elevator door opened and he saw a woman standing inside, but he didn't look closely and walked into the elevator with his head lowered. The moment the elevator door closed, he felt cold sweat running down his back.
what is that???
Peter took a deep breath. What had he just seen?
He searched his memory hard, and then found the glimpse in his peripheral vision. What was that thing on the woman's neck? ? ?
Peter swallowed and sent Schiller a message.
"Doctor, I just saw a woman with a bunch of tentacles instead of a head on her neck, but when I looked closely, they disappeared."
Peter couldn't help but look back at the woman, but she acted normal and even smiled at him when she saw Peter, as if everything Peter had just experienced was an illusion.
After receiving the news, Schiller immediately realized that Peter's situation might have begun to deteriorate. If the hotel could indeed be left, now might be the last chance.
"Don't be nervous, Peter. Forget about those anomalies, as if they never happened, and don't mention them to anyone."
Now Schiller, who is staying in Wayne Manor, can neither speak nor communicate with other people, so the only thing he can do is to communicate with Peter through text messages. He tries his best to comfort Peter and tell him not to be afraid.
Peter tried hard to calm down and erase the mentally polluting images in his mind. The elevator stopped, but not at the first floor. The door opened and a man carrying a toolbox walked in.
"Sorry, the elevator is broken. If you want to go to the lobby, please take the stairs." The repairman said this and stood at the door, obviously wanting Peter and the others to go out.
Peter didn't want to go out, but his eyes flickered and he saw out of the corner of his eye that the toolbox the repairman was holding was not a toolbox at all, but a rotten human head.
Peter walked away without caring about the woman and the repairman. He rushed out of the elevator and ran to the end of the corridor.
There are basically no accommodation rooms below the fifth floor. The third floor is the business area, which has reception rooms, meeting rooms, and a souvenir shop.
Peter ran all the way, passed by two large conference rooms, and finally stopped at the door of the tea room.
He heard the sound of a door opening, so he looked back and saw a group of people in suits and ties coming out of the conference room one after another.
His vision flashed again, and he saw that each of them had fins growing behind their ears, their eyeballs bulging outwards, and mucus dripping from their mouths, but when he looked more closely, they were all gone.
Peter felt a little panicked, but he was still able to move. He ran towards the stairwell following the emergency exit sign, but met an unexpected person. Jerome was standing at the corner of the stairwell looking at him.
"You've figured it out, haven't you? The nightmare is about to end."
"Nightmare, you mean this is a nightmare?"
"Not really," Jerome said. "Where do you think we are now?"
"Of course it's the hotel." Although Peter said it with certainty, he actually felt a little guilty. He really couldn't understand these weird things, but his intuition told him that something was wrong.
Jerome shook his head. He and Peter walked downstairs and said, "You know what? About 20 years ago, the Wayne Hotel underwent a large-scale renovation. It was said to be a hotel renovation, but in fact it was to hide something."
"what?"
"To be honest, I don't know, so I want to invite you to come and see it." Jerome said: "I think it will be amazing."
"I want to leave the hotel." Peter didn't waste any time talking to him and said directly, "I want to go to Wayne Manor."
"You can't leave the hotel now. Or rather, there is only one way to leave the hotel. That is to go to the basement of the hotel with me."
Peter stared at him for a long time, trying to find any signs of lying on his face. He was not stupid and knew that this might be a trap set by a monster. Jerome in front of him might just want to lure him to hell.
Finding he could not convince Peter, Jerome changed the subject and said, "You went to the library?"
Peter sighed and nodded. He didn't find anything particularly important in the library, but he did find a book about Gotham's history.
Peter actually didn't like literature and history books very much, so the more he read, the sleepier he became. He was so sleepy that he had to go back to his hotel room to sleep. He had many bizarre nightmares and felt dizzy when he woke up.
“Didn’t you ever wonder why you could suddenly see them?” Jerome said, making quotation marks with his fingers as he mentioned them.
Peter knew he was referring to the monsters that appeared in his peripheral vision, but he really didn't know why. Jerome looked at him and said, "Only when you are on the verge of a mental breakdown can you see the truth of this world. I have worked hard to maintain this state. You are really lucky."
Peter didn't feel that he was on the verge of a mental breakdown. He felt that he was still quite rational, but he really couldn't explain why the world in his eyes had changed.
Peter tried to look at Jerome out of the corner of his eye, but he really didn't see any monster on him. He scratched his head and said, "I don't think so either. Now I can go to the first floor and push open the revolving door to walk out. But you have to tell me what's under the hotel, otherwise I won't go with you."
Jerome seemed to be considering it. He looked Peter over again and said, "I see an outstanding talent in you. It's hard for me to describe it, but I think you and Bruce Wayne are the same type of people. You are born to be entangled in something."
"I don't think this is something to be proud of." Peter thought of the black sun, and he suddenly remembered that he had the ability to return to the fog anytime and anywhere, and perhaps he could even bring people back, so that he would have a way to retreat in case of danger.
Peter mustered up some courage and said, "Since you think I can help, you can't keep it to me. Otherwise, I won't cooperate with you."
Jerome looked at Peter strangely. He felt that this guy was too immature. He couldn't see anything special about him no matter how he looked at him. But his intuition told Jerome that he was quite extraordinary.
Out of curiosity, Jerome said: "There is a road leading to Wayne Manor in the basement of the Wayne Hotel. This was part of the renovation of the hotel back then, and no one knows what it was for."
"You must know." Peter surprised Jerome with his bluntness. "I think we can't waste any more time. It's best to be frank with each other."
"Well, it seems I can't hide it from you, but this story starts from a job I had one day. A few years ago, I joined an insurance company and became an insurance investigator."
"You can understand that I want to investigate those insurance cases, eliminate suspicion of insurance fraud, and strive for benefits for my company."
"It's not an easy job. At the beginning, it was okay because I could see through their lies at a glance. Because I did a good job, they sent me over as soon as the company encountered a difficult case."
"At first the company thought it was just a serial murder case, and even the police thought so, but something happened to me that brought me to the brink of mental breakdown, and then I saw the truth of the world."
"As I investigated, I discovered that some mysterious pollution was spreading in the city. I traced it all the way and found that this pollution did not appear recently. All clues pointed to 20 years ago."
"What happened 20 years ago?" Peter asked.
"Someone should have died, but is still alive." Jerome showed some reminiscence on his face. He said, "At that time, the Wayne family was not the only one in Gotham City. There were four major families and some other wealthy people. The relationship between them was not stable."
"Every family wants to dominate, and the Wayne family was no less ambitious. At the time, the head of the family, Thomas Wayne, was judged to be the most brilliant business genius of this century. After he took over the family business, the Wayne Group prospered."
"I didn't investigate what happened afterwards very clearly. It seems someone was deliberately concealing it. I only know that Thomas Wayne had an accident, but he didn't die. He survived."
Peter heard what Jerome meant and asked, "Do you think Thomas should have died in that accident?"
"That's what I do," Jerome said. "I identify various accidents and determine whether someone deliberately defrauded insurance. I can say responsibly that in the files I investigated, the accident should have killed Thomas Wayne, but he didn't die."
Peter is very smart, and he immediately realized, "Is the one who survived still Thomas Wayne?"
"That's the point." Jerome nodded and said, "Not only that, three months after the accident, Thomas Wayne reappeared in the public eye and issued a series of reform measures. It was this series of measures that laid the foundation for the Wayne Group's current status."
"Isn't this inconsistent with his past style?"
"It's not completely inconsistent, it's just more radical." Jerome shook his head and said, "At the same time, his wife Martha Wayne also had problems. Six months after the accident, Martha Wayne became pregnant, but she seldom went out since then, and her former friends rarely saw her anymore."
"It's understandable that pregnant women need to rest."
"No, it's not that simple. Wayne Manor started being renovated a few months after she became pregnant. That's very strange, isn't it? Who on earth would renovate a house when there's a pregnant woman in their home?"
Peter nodded, but still said hesitantly: "Maybe the environment of the manor is not suitable for newborns. They are so rich, they should have a lot of houses, it is normal to move to another place."
"That's the problem. They have so many properties, but they didn't choose to move. Martha Wayne came to the Wayne Hotel alone, and Thomas was still making a fortune in the business world."
Peter showed his disapproval. He said: "It doesn't sound like Thomas is a responsible father, but this is their family matter after all."
"But what's even more strange is that they chose to live separately during that period. People outside were speculating whether they were going to divorce. But once the child was born, their relationship became better again. They were inseparable and attended various dinners together. They became a model couple in the circle."
"Maybe it's postpartum depression?" Peter felt a little bit unconvinced. "If it was really depression, shouldn't the baby be cured immediately after birth?"
"This matter is very strange, so I conducted an in-depth investigation." The two had already walked to the lower half of the stairs on the second floor and were about to reach the first floor. Jerome continued.
"I discovered that although the Wayne Hotel and Wayne Manor were both owned by the Wayne family, the largest construction engineering company in Gotham at the time belonged to the Kane family, which was Martha Wayne's maternal family."
"If nothing unexpected happens, the Kane family must be involved in the renovation of these two places. As for what they did, we have to go underground to see."
